Chapter 5

Mercy looked up from her computer and glanced around the empty office. It was well past the end of the working day and with no witnesses around to wonder if she’d lost her mind, she let out a loud squeal of pure joy. Her smile widened as she took in the large open-plan room with its rows of work stations surrounded by double-glazed glass-partitioned cubicles which served as offices for Max and his senior team. The office walls were covered in notices, press releases and shift rotas, as well as several whiteboards on which upcoming productions and project deadlines had been scribbled in black, blue and red markers.

It was almost six months since Mercy had started work at Bamford Media, and she had never been happier. Coming to work each day had restored the sense of purpose which had seeped away slowly over the years, finally disappearing on the day she discovered Araba and Lucas’s affair.

Despite her euphoria at the idea of earning her own living, returning to work after a decade as a full-time housewife had been terrifying. Her first week as a member of Max’s close-knit professional team had merged into a blur as she tried to get to grips with technology she had never even heard of. Grappling with unfamiliar computer systems at the same time as trying to understand electronic message boards and master complex research databases, Mercy had felt like an alien who’d landed on a planet where everyone looked like her but spoke a completely different language. But, whatever she had lacked in technological skills, she’d more than made up for in her enthusiasm to learn and her willingness to work as hard and as late as possible without neglecting Hakeem. Only too aware that the team knew her as the boss’s friend (not to mention the wife of a high-profile government minister), she had been determined to prove herself in her own right and earn the respect of her colleagues. Guided by Sylvia, Max’s seasoned head of editorial content, Mercy’s writing skills which had grown rusty from a lack of use, had quickly improved, and before long she was entrusted with producing independent copy for several of the programmes in production. Within a few weeks, she’d found herself collaborating with Bamford Media’s most experienced researchers and producers to craft high-quality content and scripts for new documentaries and other TV programming, including Max’s flagship political show. The sheer number of projects swamped her days and evenings, and she regularly brought work home to meet the challenging deadlines, putting in extra time after Hakeem had gone to bed.

Lucas’s absences no longer bothered her – in fact, Mercy couldn’t wait for dinner to be over so he could leave. But while her professional life had taken a welcome turn, her personal life was utterly stagnant. After several abortive attempts to deter her from working for Max, Lucas had given up trying and their lives had fallen into a pattern of little to no communication, unless Hakeem was present.
